The Flying Boot <\/b>and In Flight<\/b>
This scheme was devised by Professor Ted Wragg and was selected by NCET for the Computers in Schools initiative. Like the Cambridge Scheme, this is another very new reading scheme and still has some gaps which will doubtless be plugged in due course. The Flying Boot<\/i> scheme is for 4 to 8 year olds, whilst In Flight<\/i> is for 7 – 10. The <\/i>Flying Boot<\/i> series (featuring the key character, Max with his friends Gobbler and Magpie) is highly structured and teaches through phonics. The series includes non-fiction material under the title "Max’s book of …" where Max visits different locations including a bird sanctuary and the high street, as well as featuring topics such as electricity and magnetism which could be used is other areas of the curriculum. There is also a series of Environmental Print books (otherwise known as "Out and about with Max") where Max takes part in a number of situations such as "Accident!" and "At the Station". Apart from the reading books, there are phonic workbooks, photocopiable masters and flashcards.<\/p>\n

In Flight<\/i> is an organized collection of reading books for top primary (7 – 10 years). The list of books contains short stories, novels, non-fiction, poetry and plays which are intended to develop advanced reading skills. There are also simplified texts for the less confident reader.<\/p>\n

The <\/i>Flying Boot<\/i> reading material is also supported by computer software on CD ROM for Acorn and PC platforms. Last year, the CD ROMs Max and the Machines<\/i> and Maxamania<\/i> won the coveted RTS Multimedia Award. Home versions of the CDs are available for PC only. There are 13 titles for the home market costing £39.95 each.<\/p>\n
